Diversity in Today’s Workplace

White males no longer make-up the majority of the workers (age 16 and up) in the United States! Sorry fellas, but in today’s workplace there are more women and minorities who are working than the traditional white male. There is even some information which indicates that women alone make-up fifty-one percent of today’s workforce. This is reinforced when you look at some statistics which have recently been reviewed and updated:

bulletThe percentage of mothers in the labor force with children under the age of six has grown from 18.2% in 1955 to an astounding 62.3% in 1996.
bulletAccording to college enrollment statistics the number of women enrolled in college in 1996 outnumbered men by 8.4 to 6.7 million.
bulletThe percentage of practicing physicians who are women: 1970: 7.6%, 1998: 22.0%.
bulletThe percentage of practicing lawyers who are women: 1960: 4.0%, 1998: 26.0%.
bulletIn 1997, the number of women employed compared with men (ages 16 years and older) was 60 million to 70 million.

Diversity goes well beyond the addition of more women into the labor force. Additionally, we have more racial and cultural minorities working in America today than ever before. Companies are advertising for management candidates who have bilingual skills (English and Spanish) in not only Florida, Texas and California but large cities such as Chicago as well.

Add in two other areas, the aging population and the disabled and you have two very powerful minority groups. The aged have a very powerful lobbying group in the AARP who are causing changes in this country’s laws. Did you know that the disabled make up the largest minority group in the United States? They do and are being supported by legislation (such as ADA) as well as the advances in medical achievements. People today with certain disabilities would not have been able to be productive workers ten years ago.

What does all of this mean to the employers of today? When combined with low unemployment across the country, it means that we have to change! We have to begin thinking out of the box. Everything from recruiting techniques, workplace environment, employee benefits, compensation and promotion policies to advertising and marketing has to be reviewed. The "old way" of conducting business is not effective any more.
